Hospital employees awarded scholarships

NEW LENOX, Ill. — The Silver Cross Foundation recently awarded a total of $15,000 in scholarships to nine hospital employees and two scholarships to children of Silver Cross employees to help further their education.

“Silver Cross is pleased to provide assistance to our motivated employees and children for continuing their education,” says Paul Pawlak, president/CEO of Silver Cross Hospital.

Physicians Legacy Scholarship – Children of Employees

Minooka resident Noel Aguilera and New Lenox resident Emmy Roesel are the 2012 recipients of $2,000 Physician’s Legacy Scholarships for children of Silver Cross employees. 

Noel Aguilera is the daughter of Jose Aguilera, who works in the hospital’s Building Services Department.  Noel is currently pursuing her degree in pharmacy at Ohio Northern University.

Emmy Roesel, is the daughter of Mary Roesel, RN in PACU. Emmy is currently pursuing her Bachelors in nursing at the University of St. Francis. 

Donna and Jim Galligan Scholarship

Manhattan resident Karen Braam and Joliet resident Heather Janicke are both the recipients of a $1,000 Donna and Jim Galligan Scholarship.

As the hospital’s newest scholarship, this award was funded by Donna and Jim Galligan, longtime Joliet residents and devoted supporters of Silver Cross Hospital.

Braam has been with Silver Cross for 32 years, currently serving as a nurse in the Cardiac Rehabilitation and Emergency Departments and is pursuing her BSN from Jacksonville University.

Janicke has been with Silver Cross for nearly seven years as a technician in the Behavioral Health Department and is pursuing a Masters degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Governors State University.

Frances M. Thomas Nursing Scholarships

Joliet resident Dongina Knight and Plainfield resident Tryniti Metz are each the recipient of a $500 Frances M. Thomas Nursing Scholarship.

In memoriam, the Silver Cross Emergency Department started a scholarship in 1991 to assist those entering the nursing profession. The scholarship is named for former Silver Cross Emergency Department Registered Nurse Frances Thomas and is awarded to assist with tuition and expenses.

Knight has been with Silver Cross for 20 months and currently serves as a certified nurse assistant at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at Silver Cross Hospital and is currently pursuing LPN at CMK Healthcare & Training Center.
