Urlacher, McManis named players of the week
(MCT) — In-season awards continue to roll in for the Chicago Bears.
Middle linebacker Brian Urlacher was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after the team’s 51-20 victory at Tennessee on Sunday.
Urlacher returned an interception of Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck 46 yards for a touchdown in the blowout. It was the seventh interception returned for a touchdown by the Bears this season, two short of the NFL record held by the 1961 Chargers.
Cornerback Sherrick McManis doubled up as he was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. McManis blocked a punt by the Titans’ Brett Kern, leading to a five-yard touchdown return for Corey Wootton, the first score of the game.
It is the first time teammates have won weekly honors in the same week since 2008 when Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Derrick Brooks and kicker Matt Bryant were awarded.
Urlacher won Defensive Player of the Week honors once last season when he had 10 tackles and an interception in the season-opening victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Urlacher has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week six times in his career.
Cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Tim Jennings have been named NFC Defensive Players of the Month and Tillman won a weekly award after helping shut down Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson on Oct. 22.
