Dresden Station begins Unit 3 refueling outage
Workers to perform 4,000 inspections, maintenance activities
Operators at Exelon’s Dresden Generating Station removed the Unit 3 generator from service Monday, Nov. 12, to begin a planned refueling outage.
During the outage, Exelon employees and supplemental workers will perform maintenance activities and replace nearly one-third of the reactor’s fuel to keep the unit running safely and reliably for the next two-year operating cycle.
Dresden Station will employ about 1,600 additional workers during the outage. About 1,000 are skilled men and women from the local union halls. Others are from nearby Exelon nuclear facilities and specialty vendors who travel from plant to plant to work on outages.
Dresden employees and supplemental workers will perform more than 4,000 inspections and maintenance activities on hundreds of the facility’s components.
One of the station’s larger projects is the installation of new low-pressure turbine rotors, which spin the generator to produce electricity. At full power, Unit 3 can produce 867 million watts.
Dresden Unit 2 will continue to supply electricity to the area while Unit 3 is offline.
Dresden Generating Station is approximately 60 miles southwest of Chicago. The station’s two operating units can produce more than 1,800 megawatts, enough electricity to power nearly 2 million average homes.
Dresden Unit 1, which began commercial operation in 1960 and was retired in 1978, has been designated a Nuclear Historic Landmark by the American Nuclear Society.
