’Skins are back, why aren’t the ’Skins fans?

To the Editor:

The ’Skins are back, but where are all the loyal ’Skin fans? We should all be back on the fence.

Of course, the parents and student body are attending the games, but you no longer have to fight for a good spot on the fence. Morris football was once a thing of legends for energy on both sides of the fence.

Visiting fans used to be forced to endure long lines at the gate just to get in, then carefully negotiate thick crowds of ’Skin fans standing behind the home bleachers before squeezing along the locker room wall lined with more ’Skin fans on the step, and then tip-toeing in front of several temporary bleachers at the fieldhouse corner, with, yes, more ’Skin fans, before reaching the safe haven called the visitors section.

Even there they were not alone, sharing space with a sprinkling of letter jackets from many of the neighboring high schools and scouts from all over. I always enjoyed the first time the visitors turned around to see what the stampede was all about as dozens of fence setters charged to the opposite end, following the ball, wanting a close-up view of the next Morris TD.

Once reaching the safety of their assigned seats, they had no choice but to stare at the long home stands packed in under the billboard listing the long history of dominance in the business of Illinois high school football. I think that’s called “home-field advantage.”

This years team and coaches deserves that same kind of respect and support for the hard work required to be one game away from the “big dance.” Please turn off the radio or the live stream and go back to the tradition of being an active player in what is locally known “Redskin Pride.”

See ya on the fence.
