GARDNER, Ill. — Sheriff Terry Marketti, 56, of Gardner, Ill., passed away unexpectedly Friday, Dec. 14, 2012, at his home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, with the Rev. John Hornicak officiating. Interment will follow in Braceville-Gardner Cemetery in Braceville, Ill.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 17, at the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington.

Born July 26, 1956, in Joliet, Ill., to the late Charles C. and Matilda “Tillie” (Batusich) Marketti Sr., Terry had been the Grundy County Sheriff since 2004, when he took over after Sheriff Jim Olson’s death. He had been a member of the sheriff’s department for 34 years, dedicating his life to serving the communities of Grundy County.

His first elected position was when he was 18 years old on the South Wilmington Village Board, which he served on for 22 years. He also served on numerous boards for charities and organizations throughout his life, including Big Brother Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties, Grundy Area P.A.D.S. (Public Action to Deliver Shelter), the Community Foundation of Grundy County, Grundy Economic Development Council, Breaking Away, Gardner Village Board, No Tolerance Task Force, the Grundy County Emergency Telephone System Board, Operation St. Nick, We Care of Grundy County, and many others. He was a past member of the Gardner Fire Protection District Board and continued to be an adviser.

He was also a member of the St. Lawrence Catholic Church in South Wilmington, Ill.

Terry owned and operated Marketti’s Shell in Gardner. He had a generous soul and was known to donate to many local charities and non-profit organizations, as well as many individuals.

Terry was a very devoted son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, great uncle, and friend.

Surviving are his brother, Rick (Donna) Marketti of Gardner; a niece, Betsy (Bryan) Hennessy of Gardner and their children, Emma and Claire Hennessy; a nephew, Blake Marketti of South Wilmington;  sister-in-law Jacke (the late “Cookie”) Marketti of Green Valley, Ariz.; sister-in-law Vivian (Dale) Bloom of Crest Hill, Ill., and their children, Brian Marketti and Eric Marketti and family, both of Joliet.

Terry was also a devoted god-father and special friend to many.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and his brother, Charles “Cookie” Marketti on Oct. 12, 2002.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in his name to any Grundy County organization Terry was associated with would be appreciated.
