Deer apparently in no hurry to leave storage lot at Mitsubishi
(MCT) — SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources says hunters harvested more than 99,000 deer during this year’s firearm season.
NORMAL — Two deer have made themselves at home in a concrete storage lot at the Mitsubishi Motors North America plant in Normal — and apparently have no intention of leaving.
“They have been out here for about a month,” plant security spokesman Kris Joye said Thursday. “They aren’t harming anything. There is a gate open for them to leave anytime they want, but they seem to be perfectly happy right here.”
The two bucks have plenty of grass and even a pond in the fenced-in area, she said. They don’t appear to be in any harm or danger. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has been contacted and has yet to come up with a solution, but she said the agency is working on a plan.
“They are really protected,” Joye said. “Actually, they have it pretty easy with the availability of grass and a pond. They are safe from hunters, too. We have had plenty of offers from hunters, but it is private property and so that is not an option.”
Since the deer appear to be healthy, she said there is no sense of urgency.
“We have the gate open so they can leave anytime they want and we don’t know if they don’t know how to leave, or if they just prefer it here,” she said.
