Tough way for Notre Dame defensive end Lewis-Moore to go out

(MCT) — MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — In a corner of a grim Notre Dame locker room late Monday, Kapron Lewis-Moore declined to specify the reason for the a pair of crutches to his right.

It was the sort of bad news no one wants to talk about, anyway. The senior defensive end suffered a right ACL injury late in the first half of a 42-14 BCS championship game loss to Alabama that will require surgery, multiple sources told the Chicago Tribune on Tuesday.

Irish coach Brian Kelly said afterward that Lewis-Moore suffered a “significant knee injury” in his final college game.

The senior captain needed help to get off the field and returned in the third quarter on crutches.

“I knew something was wrong,” Lewis-Moore said. “I don’t know what else to say about it. I hate to go out like this.”

Catching on: Many unexpected things happened against Alabama, but at least DaVaris Daniels was a pleasant surprise. The sophomore from Vernon Hills had a career night with 115 yards on six catches in the BCS title game, about two months removed from a broken clavicle suffered Nov. 10 at Boston College.

“It felt good to be back out there, especially for a game like this,” Daniels said. “Just to be back out there with my teammates, trying to be the best receiver I could be. I was making strides before the injury, so I didn’t want to have any setbacks. I guess I had a good one.”

Staying put: Again, Nick Saban was asked about the NFL. Again on Tuesday, the Alabama coach swatted away the idea, citing his ill-fated tenure as Dolphins coach.

“I kind of learned through that experience that maybe this is where I belong, and I’m really happy and at peace with all that,” Saban said. “No matter how many times I say that, y’all don’t believe it, so I don’t even know why I keep talking about it.”
