In the House, there were 19 lawmakers who had never been sworn in. And then there were a few others who moved in early or made comebacks.

Most notable was Derrick Smith, the Chicago Democrat who in August became the first lawmaker tossed from the House in 107 years following his indictment on charges that he took a $7,000 bribe in exchange for supporting a state grant.

Smith is one of two House Democrats, the other being Rep. LaShawn Ford, under federal indictment. It would take both of their votes if Democrats ever needed to come together to exercise their veto-proof majority of 71, or three-fifths, of the 118 House lawmakers.

In the Senate, taking the oath was Donne Trotter, a Chicago Democrat who gave up his bid to fill the congressional seat vacated by longtime U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. after Trotter got caught boarding a plane with an unloaded pistol. All three lawmakers have pleaded not guilty.

With their families present taking plenty of photos, some new lawmakers were caught up in the moment, one that soon might be overcome by stark political realities.

"It's an honor just to know that 62,029 people cast their vote for me," said freshman Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Orland Hills.

Aware that the issues of pensions, gay marriage and gun control are on the horizon, Hastings set his sights on the high-minded notion of "working on both sides of the aisle to make the best-informed decision — and not just only for my district but for the people of Illinois."

Newly minted Sen. Melinda Bush, D-Grayslake, agreed the pension issue is "huge" but wants to hear the various ideas before taking a position.

"It really hangs over all of us," Bush said. "Obviously, we are going to look at the pension issue with everyone else and bring in all those ideas to solve our huge pension issue."
