JOLIET, Ill. – University of St. Francis student Stephanie Castillo believes that volunteering makes one a better person.

Castillo, a political science and criminal and social justice major, took a mission trip to the Philippines during winter break and was excited to volunteer her time.

“Someone across the globe needs my help, and I can help them,” said Castillo, of Joliet, Ill. “It’s easy to get caught up in the culture we live in, and we don’t always think about other people. I know I’m only one person, but I believe that one person can make a difference.”

Castillo is no stranger to volunteering her time. In March 2012, Castillo attended another university-sponsored mission trip to Israel. She said that experience changed her life.

“I was working with young girls in the community, and I arranged for them to be honorary Girl Scouts,” said Castillo. “I was teaching these girls the skills to be leaders, and I really connected with them. That’s when I realized the world was so much bigger.”

It’s not too often that Castillo has a day to herself. In fact, she said she rarely has a few hours for herself.

She volunteers as a community engagement specialist for the Girl Scouts of Chicago and Northwest Indiana and is a consultant for a company run by a family friend.
