Five Cubs, Sox players file for arbitration

(MCT) — Five Chicago players — Cubs pitchers Matt Garza, James Russell and Jeff Samardzija, and White Sox second baseman Gordon Beckham and outfielder Alejandro De Aza — filed Tuesday for salary arbitration.

The five players and their respective clubs will exchange salary figures on Friday. If an agreement can't be reached, there will be a hearing scheduled between Feb. 1-21, but cases usuallly are settled before a hearing.

Of the five players, Garza stands to earn the most. He received $9.5 million in 2012 and can become a free agent in 2014. Samardzija earned $2.64 million in 2012 and Russell $512,500.

Beckham received $520,000 in 2010 but could see his 2013 salary jump to $3 million as a first-time arbitration eligible player. De Aza earned $495,000 in 2012 and could see his 2013 salary increase to around $1.7 million.
