Redskin speech team takes second in NIB12

Bridgemen, Kaupt win tournament title for dramatic duet acting

Morris Community High School’s Kirsten Bridgemen and Kayla Kaupt were named Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference tournament champions in dramatic duet acting.

Morris Community High School’s speech team took second place in the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference speech tournament, which was held Saturday, Jan. 12, at Sterling High School.

DeKalb High School finished ahead of Morris in first place. Third place went to Rochelle High School, while Sterling High School placed fourth and Geneseo High School took fifth.

The Redskins broke into the final rounds in all 14 events, with 10 events having two Redskin finalists. Kirsten Bridgemen and Kayla Haupt were tournament champions in dramatic duet acting. The partners had a perfect day of competition, garnering a first place from all five judges who saw them perform.

Mary Wolverton took second place in humorous interpretation.

Third-place finishers were Carol Marie Gaska and Sophie Gaska in dramatic duet acting, Jake Hesslau in radio speaking, Jessie Eastman in oratorical declamation, Kayla Haupt in dramatic interpretation, Madison Rodgers in prose reading, and Rhett Higgins in original comedy.

Fourth-place ribbons went to Jacob O’Marrah and Josh Hosek in humorous duet acting, Jacob O’Marrah in informative speaking, Luke Terhall in extemporaneous speaking, Robbi Hicks in original oratory and Sophie Gaska in oratorical declamation.

Fifth-place finishers were Alyssa Rogers in poetry reading and radio speaking, Carol Marie Gaska in prose reading, Kade Bashor in extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking and Mary Wolverton in original comedy.

In sixth place were Nancy Serrano and Sylvia Salinas in humorous duet acting, Nancy Serrano in poetry reading, Robbi Hicks in informative speaking, Sam Obrochta in impromptu speaking and Sylvia Salinas in special occasion speaking.

Sandwich Invitational

Also on Saturday, Jan. 12, the Morris Community High School junior varsity speech team competed at the Sandwich High School Invitational, taking second place out of seven teams.

Finishing in second place at Sandwich was Anne Hudson in original comedy, Gracie Jewett in original oratory, Holly Gainer in informative speaking, Jessica Carey in impromptu speaking and prose reading, Kyle Monk in extemporaneous speaking, and Yese Guzman in poetry reading.

Third-place finishers were Adam Skelton and Geoffrey Lamaze in humorous duet acting, Emily Walker in prose reading, Eric Robinson in oratorical declamation, Maren Bashor in dramatic interpretation and informative speaking, and Tristan DeGrush in original oratory.

In fifth place was Adam Skelton in poetry reading, Alexa Rain in prose reading, Avery Norris in oratorical declamation, Carrington Herman in humorous interpretation, Cole Enervold in original comedy and Tristan DeGrush in radio speaking.

Sixth-place speakers were Hernan Gutierrez in impromptu speaking and Lexie Sievert in humorous interpretation.

The Redskin Speech Team is coached by Andrea Gustafson. Assistant coaches are Curt Forbes and Denise Gaska.

Kade Bashor, Jacob O’Marrah and Madison Rodgers are the team captains. Carol Marie Gaska and Alyssa Rogers are the junior captains.
