CHANNAHON — The Channahon school board last week approved allowing the Superintendent Dr. Karin Evans to enter into the Will County Real Estate Assessment Agreement for the ExxonMobil property in Channahon Township for 2013-2017.

According to District 17 Finance Manager Mike Schroeder, the taxing bodies affected by the assessment met earlier this month and agreed on a tentative figure.

Taxes from ExxonMobil account for a significant part of the school district’s budget each year, and through the previous agreement, have grown from 30 percent of the district’s EAV to 57 percent in 2012. Schroeder said if the new assessment agreement is formally set in place, there will continue to be some growth, but at a slower pace.

Pioneer Path School assistant principal Kathy Bisch also showed board members the Channahon Fire Protection District’s new calendar, which features art from the district’s third and fourth graders.

Art was chosen through a contest sponsored by the fire department. Student winners were Delainey Roots (January), Mitch Thomas (February), Mallory Wennberg (March), Jordanna Cortes (April), Jaimi Curtis (May), Kayla Widlowski (June), Pierce Hadden (July), McKenna Maskel (August), Jack Fink (September), Luc Strange (October), Payton Gregorich (November), and Lilliana Lozano (December).

Also at this week’s Channahon school board meeting, the board:

• Approved renewing the district’s intergovernmental agreement for random bus driver drug testing services.

• Approved the 2013-14 parent/student handbook.

• Approved keeping next year’s school fees the same as this year’s fees.

• Approved next school year’s calendar, with the first day of school for students on Tuesday, Aug. 20.

• Congratulated students, staff and administrators at Channahon Junior High and Three Rivers School for earning the Academic Excellence Award for 2012.
