(MCT) — A woman was taken to a hospital after a plane bound for Ottawa, Canada, returned to O’Hare International Airport when smoke filled the plane Monday, authorities said.

The passenger was taken to Resurrection Medical Center in fair-to-serious condition, according to the Chicago Fire Department’s media office.

The ExpressJet Flight 5828, operating for United Express, had been scheduled to take off a little before 4:30 p.m., but departed late. It returned to Chicago about 6:15 p.m. because of smoke in the cabin and cockpit, according to Atlanta-based ExpressJet.

ExpressJet did not have information about a passenger being injured. All 38 passengers who were aboard were able to leave the plane safely, said Kate Modolo, a spokeswoman for ExpressJet.

Passengers were put on another plane and the flight was expected to depart about 10 p.m. Monday, Modolo said.
