During the teacher institute on Feb. 15, 2013, Morris Community High School faculty and staff participated in an active shooter demonstration presented by Sergeant Dustin Geier and Trooper George Del Rio of the District 5 State Police.

Involved in the training were additional officers from the Illinois State Police, Morris Police Department and the Grundy County Sheriff’s Department. The training was designed to provide faculty and staff with procedural updates and the experience of a realistic scenario involving an active shooter and hostage situation.

“The safety and security of students and staff is always a top priority,” Superintendent Dr. Patrick Halloran said. “The increase in school violence makes presentations of this type more important than ever. “We are very appreciative of the cooperation between local law enforcement in providing this valuable staff in-service opportunity.”

Trooper Del Rio gave a brief presentation on the history of school shootings and how law enforcement response has evolved in order to appropriately handle violent situations.

The second portion of training took place in the high school cafeteria and involved an active shooter/hostage scenario in order to provide participants with a realistic experience.

“It is important for faculty and staff to follow their instincts if an actual event were to take place,” School Resource Officer Steve Huettemann said. “We have policies and procedures in place, but you must keep an open mind in the event of a real life situation.”

Illinois school districts are required by law to participate in a variety of annual safety drills.
