Dunn goes deep for White Sox

(MCT) — GLENDALE, Ariz. — Adam Dunn showed the benefits of his mission to swing earlier in counts, hitting a two-run homer Sunday on a 1-0 count off Dodgers sidearm reliever Peter Moylan.

“I was just going to try to get a pitch and the location I was looking to swing at it,” said Dunn, who said he is concentrating more on location than a certain pitch in an effort to stay out of 3-2 counts after hitting .118 with 65 strikeouts in those situations last season.

Dunn’s home run came in Dunn’s second at-bat after he grounded to first on a 3-2 count against Zack Greinke.

Dunn added that he was satisfied with an undisclosed mechanical adjustment he wanted to address this spring.

Medical report: Jeff Keppinger went 1-for-3 with a single in his Sox debut as the designated hitter and said he believes he will make his debut at third base this week while he recovers from a broken right ankle.

“I haven’t had any swelling,” said Keppinger, who has had his ankle taped. “All activities have been full go. I haven’t had any setbacks.”

Keppinger’s only issue has been pushing off the ankle when throwing and taking secondary leads.

Matt Thornton threw 35 pitches without discomfort in his left elbow and is back on schedule to make his exhibition debut March 5.

Third baseman Brent Morel, who didn’t play with the Sox after May 17 because of a herniated disk in his back, felt fine one day after playing 21/2 innings.

“The only time I think about it is warming it up in the morning, doing my routine,” Morel said. “And once I get loose, I don’t think or worry about it.”

Out for blue blood: Rookie and Bay Area native Erik Johnson relished pitching three innings against the Dodgers. “Watching the Giants growing up, I saw the Dodgers a lot,” Johnson said. “It felt good to go out at these guys and attack them.”
