The friends and family of Robyn White who helped fill We Care’s food pantry on March 22 passed and carried nearly 5,000 pounds of food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank’s trunk into the We Care facility on Illinois Avenue.

On Friday, March 22, the friends and family of Robyn White donated $650 to help We Care purchase 4,592 pounds of food from Northern Illinois Food Bank.

White’s family also provided volunteers, many from New Community Christian Church, to unload the truck and stock the shelves of We Care’s food pantry.

“This is the fifth anniversary since Robyn passed. We really enjoy this opportunity to get together each year in a way that would make her proud,” said Randy White.

“She loved this community and loved helping people in need.”

During the month since the previous Fill the Pantry, We Care helped 187 families from its food pantry.

We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for the pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

This month’s delivery included 11.3-ounce boxes of snack crackers for 14 cents each, 7.5-ounce bags of corn snacks for 9 cents each, and 13-ounce boxes of cereal for 20 cents each.

In addition to the food that We Care purchases with the donations from local beneficiaries, the food pantry also receives food that is provided for free as part of the Emergency Food Program. The EFP this month provided instant potatoes, canned pork, great northern beans, mixed fruit, diced tomatoes, canned peaches, catfish, frozen blueberries, spaghetti sauce, canned pork, chicken leg quarters, sliced ham, orange juice, whole chickens and seasoned pork patties.

Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include New Community Christian Church, LyondellBasell employees, and Peace Lutheran Church Youth Group.
