Find out where Dist. 111 candidates stand on bowling's home

Published: Tuesday, April 2, 2013 9:05 a.m. CDT

Almost 50 percent of our property taxes are for the schools. Yet, when it is time to elect the school board, we do not know who the candidates are.

We probably vote for the names we recognize from signs around the community, but not from their platforms. We need to find out about the school board candidates like we do for the municipal elections.

The election is on April 9 this year. There are several  candidates running for all three school districts — Channahon 17, Minooka 201 and Minooka High School 111.

I have an issue with the current high school board concerning the Minooka High School girls’ bowling team because the  board allows them to compete in Joliet. I inquired about this with the school board last October and they supported this policy.

Obviously, I was disappointed that the school board would not change facilities and bowl at Channahon Lanes.

In addition to my personal feelings, I am also upset as a taxpaying citizen — as both a business owner and homeowner in the MCHS district.

I do not believe that the school board should support spending our tax dollars outside the school district, especially when there is a facility in the district that can be utilized.

If you disagree with the policy of spending our tax dollars outside the taxing district, please contact the three members of the school  board seeking re-election and ask them if they are planning to continue that practice. Chris Kobe, Doug Kaufman and Patti Ruettiger can be reached through Colleen Ward at MCHS at cward@mchs.net or (815) 467-2557.

Also, please contact the opposing candidates to inquire about their  positions.  The candidates are Mike Brozovich, Sherry Schmidt, Charles Hiscock, Wendi Arlis and Michelle Mullen.
