Kopczick’s handling of flooding situation reason to vote for Muffler

To the Editor:

My mother has lived in Morris’ Fourth Ward for over 60 years. A modular home was brought in and placed on the adjacent lot east of her home. Three flex hoses were buried to collect and carry rain water away, but the outlets directly dumped water on my mother’s property, resulting in flooding inside her garage/workshop.

This occurred on three occasions, destroying most of the contents. This was not an act of God, but poor planning and engineering. Municipal codes were violated, including flood zone regulations. My mom should not have to suffer loss because of a lack of city oversight.

There is now a storm sewer in her yard to remedy the problem.

We decided to make an appointment to talk with Mayor Kopczick. During that meeting he was most disrespectful, and kept straying from the issue we wished to discuss with him.

We did not feel welcome there. The mayor claimed he was trying to contact Paul Osmon of the DNR regarding the run-off issue. After waiting over a year, we took the matter in our own hands and called Osmon, who said that Mayor Kopczick never contacted him regarding her problem, and this matter would not involve the DNR anyway.

Mom also had a phone conversation with a FEMA representative for the state of Illinois, and he stated that flood zone or not, you cannot cause hardship to neighboring property. There are several ways to put in foundations that will not divert water to others.

The mayor, city attorney, building and zoning officer and both Fourth Ward aldermen are aware of this and shame on all of you for not following your own codes and regulations.

A final home inspection for the property was requested several times, and we are still waiting. Perhaps she needs a relative at city hall.

On Tuesday, April 9, I urge you to vote for Drew Muffler.
