Marseilles man found dead at scene of fire in his garage

Foul play not suspected in Jelm’s death

Merle D. Jelm, 75, of Marseilles, was found dead Saturday, April 6, at the scene of a residential garage fire.

A passerby observed and called in the fire near East 24th Road, north of Marseilles, around 7:45 a.m.
The Marseilles Fire Department responded to the scene and quickly extinguished the fire.

Upon making entry to the garage, firefighters found the homeowner, Jelm, in the garage. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fire is currently being investigated. No foul play is suspected.
