Many have read about them in books.
In Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, Cosette is treated as a scullery maid for the duration of her stay in Montfermeil. In Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine, the protagonist Ella becomes a scullery maid for her wicked stepmother. Last but not least, in The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the character Martha is depicted as a scullery maid.
Many have seen them in movies. Snow White in the 1937 Disney animated film was a scullery maid. Disney’s Cinderella in the 1950 film was one, as well.
Presenter Rachael Mellen has more than 30 years of experience in genealogical research and teaching. She will share her personal connection to “Life below Stairs: From Scullery Maid to Lady’s Maid,” as well as slides, recipes and first-hand accounts from those who lived below stairs.
This program will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at the Morris Area Public Library, 604 Liberty St.
