Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers will be recognized with six Excellence in Healthcare Awards at Professional Research Consultants “2013 Excellence in Healthcare” conference in June.

Professional Research Consultants (PRC) is the marketing research firm that conducts the patient perception surveys for Morris Hospital.

The awards are based on feedback from a sampling of patients who received services in 2012 and will include:

• 5-Star Award Inpatient OB/GYN, Overall Quality – Family Birthing Suites • 5-Star Award Outpatient Clinic – Primary, Overall Quality of Care – Marseilles Healthcare Center • 5-Star Outpatient Surgery, Overall Quality of Care – Outpatient Surgery • 4-Star Inpatient, Overall Quality of Care – all inpatient combined • 4-Star Outpatient, Overall Quality of Care – Laboratory, Imaging, Cardiology combined • 4-Star Emergency Department, Overall Quality of Care – Emergency Department

The 5-Star awards are presented to hospitals ranking in the top 10 percent of PRC’s national client database (above the 90th percentile) based on the percent of patients who give an “excellent” rating on the overall quality of care question. The 4-Star awards are presented to hospitals that rank in the top 25 percent, or between the 75th and 89th percentile.

Morris Hospital’s Minooka Health-care Center, Ridge Road Immediate Care, Laboratory main campus, 2 South and 2 East were also in the 75th percentile at the end of 2012. However, PRC does not give 4-Star awards in these categories.

“Creating an excellent experience for our patients is one of the highest priorities for our organization,” said Mark Steadham, president & CEO of Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. “That’s why we closely monitor and regularly communicate our patient survey results to our physicians and staff throughout the year, with a goal of being in the 90th percentile in all areas.”

‘A’ Grade for Patient Safety

Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers has retained its “A” rating on the Leapfrog Group’s updated Hospital Safety Score report that was released this week.

This is the third consecutive time Morris Hospital has received an “A” since the Hospital Safety Score report was launched for the first time in June 2012. An updated report was also released in November 2012.

Using an A, B, C, D, F scale, the Hospital Safety Score report evaluates hospitals’ surgical outcomes and use of evidence-based patient safety processes on 26 performance measures. According to Leapfrog Group, the letter grade reflects how safe hospitals are for patients, with respect to preventable harm and medical errors.

The data used to calculate the grade comes from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). In addition, secondary data is used from the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey.

Of the 114 Illinois hospitals listed on the most recently released survey, 42 percent received an “A,” 34 percent received a “B,” 22 percent received a “C,” less than 1 percent received a “D,” and less than 1 percent received an “F.”

Nationally, 31 percent received an “A,” 25 percent received a “B,” 37 percent received a “C,” 6 percent received a “D” and less than 1 percent received an “F.” Results for 2,514 hospitals across the nation are available at www.hospitalsafetyscore.org.

“Providing the highest quality patient care is our top priority at Morris Hospital,” says Kimberly Landers, MS, RN, NEA-BC, vice president of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Executive at Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers. “We monitor our quality data daily to assure that we are adhering to the evidence-based quality measures.”

In recent years, Morris Hospital has demonstrated its commitment to patient safety by participating in CMS’s Surgical Care Improvement Project, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s 5 Million Lives campaign, Project RED (Re-Engineered Discharge), CDC and Illinois Hospital Association (IHA) Quality Initiatives to minimize risk of infections, AHRQ Annual Patient Safety Survey, and the IHA Hospital Engagement Network.

In addition to continuous monitoring of adherence to CMS’s evidence-based, scientifically researched standards of care, Morris Hospital further promotes patient safety through the use of an electronic medication administration record, bedside medication verification bar coding scanning, electronic medical records, and computerized physician order entry.

Leapfrog Group is a Washington D.C.-based non-profit organization that represents large corporations and public agencies that buy health benefits for employees. While there are several other hospital ratings in the market – many of which use Leapfrog data for their calculations – the Hospital Safety Score is unique in that it is offered free to the public, along with a full analysis of the data and methodology used to calculate each individual hospital’s Hospital Safety Score.

The Hospital Safety Score relies on the advice of the nation’s foremost patient safety experts, whose participation is a voluntary contribution to Leapfrog’s nonprofit mission.

Serving patients in 18 communities, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers includes the 89-bed Morris Hospital, as well as a network of healthcare centers.
