Street closings planned throughout Gus Macker

Downtown streets will be shut down starting tonight

Published: Friday, May 31, 2013 9:52 a.m. CST

The eleventh annual Gus Macker Morris 3-on-3 basketball tournament will arrive in downtown Morris this weekend, so members of the organizing committee would like to inform the public of the following street closings and parking restrictions that will be in place for the event.

Beginning at 5 p.m. tonight, Friday, May 31, certain downtown streets will be closed until the conclusion of the tournament on Sunday, June 2. The tournament site and affected streets include Liberty Street, from Illinois Ave-nue to Jefferson Street. Additionally, one block to the east and west of Liberty (Franklin to Wauponsee) will also be closed.

No parking will be permitted on these streets after 5:00 p.m. on Friday.  Unattended vehicles will be towed. Throughout the tournament on June 1 and 2, the west Sheriff’s Office parking lot on Illinois Avenue will be reserved for tournament officials.

In order to assure that there is ample parking for downtown bank and store customers, the lot at Main and Franklin will be monitored and reserved on Saturday morning.

On Wednesday afternoon, May 29, the city parking lot located at the corner of Wauponsee and Jackson was closed for the delivery and assembly of hoops. A portion of the lot will be reopened on Saturday, June 1.

Since Thursday evening, May 30, several parking spots at the corners of Liberty and Washington and Liberty and Main have been reserved to hold bleachers for the tournament.

The Gus Macker is hosted by the MDDP and sponsored locally WCSJ/WJDK and the Morris Daily Herald.

The MDDP, the Gus Macker organizing committee, sponsors and volunteers thank the community for their cooperation and support of this event and hope that many of our area residents will take advantage of the opportunity to come out and watch some great basketball over the weekend.
