URBANA, Ill. — As the demand for local, sustainably grown food continues to rise, farmers and aspiring farmers are working to meet the demand through the creation of small-scale, entrepreneurial farm businesses.

To facilitate these new farm businesses and address the needs of a new generation of aspiring entrepreneurial farmers, University of Illinois Extension will host the workshop, “Is Entrepreneurial Farming for You?” from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, at the U of I Extension office in Decatur.

Deborah Cavanaugh-Grant, an Extension local food systems and small farms educator said the workshop is designed to help people who think they might want to get their feet wet in sustainable farming learn what it takes to start and manage a farm-based business, and to decide whether this is the path they are ready to take.

Topics to be discussed include goal setting, financial planning, and marketing options. Workshop participants will also have the opportunity to meet experienced sustainable farmers and other prospective farmers.

“Participants will also learn about different successful farm enterprises and have a chance to ask questions about the genesis and development of farm businesses,” said Doug Gucker, an Extension local food systems and small farms educator.

The workshop will be held at the U of I Extension office at 3351 N. President Howard Brown Blvd., Decatur, Ill., which is on the campus of Richland Community College under the large wind generator.

Registration is $20 a person, which includes a light supper.
