Minooka softball has last laugh over SPC class

Published: Friday, July 12, 2013 2:32 p.m. CDT

While Plainfield Central’s softball team may have won the Southwest Prairie Conference this past spring, the last laugh belonged to the Minooka Indians. Minooka was able to bounce back from a fourth-place SPC finish, in the process leaping past the Wildcats in a Class 4A Sectional final, en route to its first state championship ever.

Still, the regular season SPC slate belonged to Central.

Minooka lost to Central 1-0 at the start of the season before rebounding for a 7-2 win late in the spring. Still, Central won the conference by finishing 11-3 while both Plainfield East and Plainfield South were both 10-4 and the Indians were a distant fourth with an 8-6 league mark.

The Indians did come back to beat Central 4-2 for the Lincoln-Way East Sectional championship, but the league season had been laid to rest by then.

Brittany Warnecke of Oswego East was named the SPC MVP for her performance for the Wolves this year as a senior. She was the only pick for East this season.

Central had five All-Conference selections in: seniors Kaleigh Nagle, Kristina Shahan, juniors Timi Tooley and Alison Mangino and sophomore Michaela Schlattman. Plainfield East had four picks in seniors Nina Maggio, Tayor Messer and Annie Molek and sophomore Jessica Rio. South had three picks in senior Alyssa Mannucci, junior Adri Cura and sophomore Jordan Harbacek.

Minooka’s two selections were seniors Sara Novak and Jackie Lilek.

The remaining picks were: senior Kelly Kennedy of Plainfield North, sophomore Kirsty Tracy of Oswego, senior Briana Floyd of Romeoville, junior Tiffany Palmatier of Oswego East and senior Caroline Roberts of Plainfield North.

Romeoville’s team was given the SPC’s sportsmanship award this spring.
