Newberry gives program a veteran

Published: Friday, Aug. 16, 2013 6:00 p.m. CDT

Jacquelyn Newberry has played on the girls golf program at Seneca for as long as the program has existed.

Newberry started golfing for Seneca in 2011, when Seneca formed its own girls team. Newberry played for the Lady Irish again in 2012, when they finished 2-11 overall and 1-8 in the Interstate Eight Conference.

The program now, Newberry says, is much different than it was during that first season.

“It has grown in many ways,” Newberry said.

“The first year, we had four girls, and we didn’t quite know what to expect. We went to meets and were overly competitive. That year we mostly focused on getting our scores down, because we hadn’t previously played.”

Not only do the 2013 Lady Irish have a third-year starter in Newberry, they also have three sophomores, Natalie Hamilton, Heather Vroman and Hannah Cisco, who were on the team last season. All are sophomores. Another sophomore, Samantha DeGraaf, is also on the team.

“The girls are looking to build on the two wins from a season ago,” Seneca head coach Bryan Erickson said. “Coach (Todd) Yegge and I believe that the girls team will be more competitive this year, with three of the sophomores having a year of experience under their belt.”
