Emanuel to appear on Letterman tonight

Published: Monday, Sept. 9, 2013 9:57 a.m. CST

Mayor Rahm Emanuel will hit the late night talk show couch Monday, sitting for an interview with David Letterman.

Emanuel will fly to New York Monday to tape the segment and fly back to Chicago that night, mayoral spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said.

Emanuel's appearance is timed to coincide with the release of a Discovery Channel documentary on presidential chiefs of staff, "The Presidents' Gatekeepers," in which Emanuel talks about his time as President Barack Obama's chief of staff.

Letterman has a reputation as a tougher interviewer than some of his late night peers, and is known for lobbing pointed questions at everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Bill O'Reilly to Al Gore.

Hamilton said it's impossible to say whether the talk show host will turn the discussion to some of the difficulties Emanuel has had with schools or violence in Chicago while mayor.

"I think it will probably be more focused toward his time in the White House," she said.

The mayor has not been asked to read Letterman's signature Top 10 List, Hamilton said.

Emanuel joins comedian Ricky Gervais and R & B musician Janelle Monae on the program, according to CBS.

The documentary about chiefs of staff will air on the Discovery Channel in two parts on Sept. 11 and Sept. 12.
