SENECA – The Seneca Future Farmers of America and the Grundy County Farm Bureau Young Farmers have joined forces to provide another “grain rescue tube” for Grundy County.

Every fire department in Grundy County now has access to this piece of rescue equipment as a result of this three-year program. The funds for the tubes were acquired through a grant from Alliance Pipeline, the Grundy County Farm Safety golf outing and other money raised by the Seneca FFA.

The grain rescue tube is designed to be placed around a person trapped in grain in a bin, making it easier to extract them. Morris, Coal City, Verona/Kinsman, Minooka, Gardner/South Wilmington and now Mazon have one of the tubes at their immediate disposal.

Grain acts somewhat like quicksand and can crush and suffocate a person.

“Grain bin entrapments are completely preventable,” Farm Bureau member Mike Carey said. “But they do happen and are usually fatal. The rescue tube can be put around the trapped person, preventing them from sinking further and from the grain causing more pressure on the body.

“One of the tubes that our organizations purchased last year has already saved a life.”

“We are very proud to be able to contribute the safety of our agricultural community,” Seneca FFA Vice President Brandon Pasdertz said. “However, we hope that our investment, in this case, will never have to be used.”
