Corn Festival crowns queen

The 2013 Grundy County Corn Festival Queen, Peighton Shannon of Morris, was crowned Friday evening at the Jackson Street stage after the annual Queen Parade through downtown Morris.

Each of the county’s four high schools chose four attendants for queen, with the exception of Minooka Community High School, which sent only one candidate, as the school’s homecoming was this weekend.

The pool was narrowed down to four queen’s court, chosen by each school in advance and announced on stage.

The queen’s name was drawn from the court by last year’s queen, Natalie Cash, from Gardner-South Wilmington High School.

Peighton answered questions just after her coronation.

Q. Peighton, what did you think when your name was announced as the 2013 Grundy County Corn Festival Queen?

A. I was pretty happy. I was pretty excited.

Q. What are some of your favorite things about Corn Fest?

A. The food. I eat Pam’s corn dogs and Pogliano’s po’ boys.

Q. What have you done so far at Corn Fest this year?

A. I performed in the talent show.

Q. What are some of your school involvements?

A. I am in Poms.

Q. Is there anything you’re active in outside school?

A. I go to Mueller’s School of Dance.

Q. What do you do for fun?

A. I shoot baskets, and I read a lot. My favorite books are The Hunger Games series.

Q. What are you planning on doing after high school?

A. I’m not sure yet.

Q. What are your favorite subjects in school?

A. I love English and U.S. history.
