Permit process for fracking to begin

SPRINGFIELD – The Growing Resources and Opportunity for the Workforce in Illinois is pleased the Illinois Department of Natural Resources has begun the process of registering – and ultimately granting permits – to companies wishing to conduct hydraulic fracturing in Illinois.

The Hydraulic Fracturing Regulatory Act requires a permit applicant to register with the DNR at least 30 days prior to submitting a permit application, according to a news release from GROW-IL.

Once the registration is accepted, companies can apply for individual fracturing permits that should occur early next year.

The state Legislature passed earlier this year a law that regulated the practice in Illinois.

Registration information can be found at http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/mines/Pages/HydraulicFracturing.aspx.

“We are very pleased the Department of Natural Resources is opening up the registration process,” Mark Denzler, co-chair of GROW-IL and vice president and COO of the Illinois Manufacturers’ Association, said in the news release. “Our coalition is excited progress is being to realize the tremendous economic benefit of hydraulic fracturing here in Illinois. This law will create thousands of jobs, millions of dollars in revenue while keeping our environment safe.”

“We need to create jobs for working men and women and we’re one step closer in doing that today,” Michael T. Carrigan, co-chair of GROW-IL and president of the Illinois AFL-CIO, said in the news release. “We’re encouraged with the progress being made by DNR that will result in good paying jobs for working families in Illinois.”

GROW-IL is a coalition of more than two dozen business, labor, construction, transportation and agricultural organizations focused on enacting common sense hydraulic fracturing legislation.
