Mrs. Horace (Mary Joan) Helgeson

MORRIS — Mrs. Horace (Mary Joan) Helgeson, 79, of Morris, Ill., passed away early Saturday morning, Oct. 26, 2013, in Morris Healthcare Center.

Born July 3, 1934, in Morris, she was the daughter of the late Marjorie (Harney) Zacher.

Joan was educated in Morris Schools and graduated from Morris Community High School with the class of 1952.

On Sept. 13, 1952, she married Horace “Bud” Helgeson in Somonauk. She was employed with Morris School District #101, and for 30 years with the Morris Daily Herald as a bookkeeper, retiring in 1999.

She enjoyed reading and spending time with the family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of First United Methodist Church Morris.

She is survived by two sons, Bruce (Patricia) Helgeson of Morris and Brian (Marilyn) Helgeson of Ottawa; grandchildren, Nikole (Matt) Decker of Morris, John (Tasha) Helgeson of Streator, Joseph Thompson of Ottawa, Salli (Richard) Bowen of Missouri, Jerry (Michelle) Haff of Marseilles, Randy (Crystal) Haff of Morris, and Becki (John) Matlock of Marsielles; great-grandchildren, Christopher, Shelbie, Kenny, Riely, Sierra, Joey, Nathan, Cody, Christopher, Brooke, James, Chloe, Emma and Harper; one sister, Susan (Charles) Baker-Clark of Iowa City, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother on Feb. 12, 1998; and her husband on May 10, 2006.

Joan’s family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, at the U.C.Davis-Callahan Funeral Home, 301 W. Washington St. in Morris. A celebration of Joan’s life will be held immediately following the visitation at 7 p.m. in the U. C. Davis-Callahan Funeral Home. Cremation Rites will be accorded with a private burial at a later date.

Memorials may be made in Joan’s name to the First United Methodist Church or the Activity Fund of the Morris Healthcare Center.
