ORLAND HILLS (MCT) — A 12-year-old girl on her way home from school was struck and slammed against a tree after a man tried to pull her into a car in Orland Hills, according to police.

The girl told police she got off a school bus around 3:30 p.m. and noticed a man following her, police said. The girl called 911 on her cell phone and told a dispatcher where she was at before the call was disconnected, police said.

She started to run, but the man grabbed her and tried to get her into a red car driven by another person in a ski mask, police said. The girl said the man hit her and struck "her head several more times against a tree," police said.

When officers arrived, the girl was lying on the ground.

"The child was extremely traumatized, to the point she did not recognize or respond to her parents," police said in a release.

The girl was taken to Palos Community Hospital and transferred to Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn. Police said they are looking for a light-skinned man in his late teens to early 20s. Anyone with information can call the police 708-349-4434.
