MORRIS – U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, said he knows firsthand the importance of local food pantries and other organizations that help the needy.

“My father ran a homeless shelter for 30 years so it’s something I’m specifically in-tune with and care about,” Kinzinger said after his tour of the We Care of Grundy County facility. We Care assists about 7,000 families with food, rent, utilities, prescriptions and holiday assistance each year.

Kinzinger also toured the Rockford Rescue Mission and the DeKalb Salvation Army food pantry Monday to see how the organizations are working to meet needs in their communities this holiday season.

“It’s the holiday season, it’s a tough time ... so I think it’s important to highlight how the private sector – through donations and community involvement – can help folks who are down and out,” Kinzinger said.

Kinzinger spent about an hour at the We Care facility, talking with Executive Director Denise Gaska and meeting volunteers.

“You get to see communities come together and unite behind what is an unfortunately growing need and has been growing especially in the last few years,” Kinzinger said.

Kinzinger said the United States has a generous population base that makes a big impact during the holiday season.

Gaska said she was happy to see a congressman recognize the work being done at the community level to fill the gaps in assistance.
