For weekend weather, rain, ice or snow possible

Flooding, ice storms, heavy snow. Take your pick for the weekend.

The only sure thing is that a major storm churning out of California is headed this way.

One early model suggested as much as 8 inches of snow could hit the Chicago area on Sunday, but more recent models are indicating just up to 4 inches to the north of Chicago, with the city and south suburbs getting an inch or less.

But the storm also could spawn heavy rain, freezing rain and sleet, especially south of Interstate 80, according to the National Weather Service, which has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the weekend.

“The storm is still several days away and there is some uncertainty regarding the exact track,” the weather service said in the outlook. “Any change in the forecast track of the storm will result in changes in the anticipated precipitation types.”

The Morris area could see a chance of freezing rain and sleet before noon Saturday, followed by rain, according to the weather service.

Rain is expected that night, followed by snow Sunday, mainly before noon.
