GARDNER – Interstate 55 near Gardner was shut down for about two hours Monday afternoon.

Multiple accidents occurred on the stretch of highway from mile marker 220 to 225, said Sgt. Scott Angus of Illinois State Police District 5. The accidents included at least two semitrailers and 12 cars, he said. Quick snowfall and slick roads contributed to the accidents.

The incidents occurred about 2:30 p.m., Angus said.

Injuries did occur, but he did not know the severity of the injuries. According to the scanner reports, at least one extrication was completed and multiple ambulances were on scene.

Gardner Fire Protection District Chief Terry Jensen did not return calls for information before press time.
