A Coal City man has been sentenced to four years in prison after he pleaded guilty to a reckless homicide charge stemming from the death of a 16-year-old passenger who was traveling in a vehicle with him last year when he got into an accident.

Matthew C. Moser, 20, pleaded guilty in February to reckless homicide and was sentenced Monday.

He will have to serve at least 50 percent of the time sentenced, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said Wednesday.

On Feb. 1, 2013, Alyssa Nicole Swyndro, a junior at Coal City High School, died when the pick-up truck she was riding in with Moser left Whitetie Road, a quarter-mile west of Broadway Street.

The vehicle struck a culvert and then rolled into a tree. The Grundy County Coroner’s Office noted at the time the roads were covered in snow.

On that Super Bowl weekend in 2013, Moser was taken to the emergency room and once released he was arrested and charged with aggravated driving under the influence resulting in death, driving under the combination of alcohol and drugs, driving too fast for conditions, unlawful possession of alcohol by a minor, unlawful consumption of alcohol by a minor and failure to wear a seatbelt.

“Looking at all the facts and circumstances, it was a tough case,” Helland said.

The sentencing came as an agreed upon plea deal with the defendant and Swyndro’s family was consulted, he said.
