Coal City school district approves summer projects

COAL CITY – This summer, the Coal City Community Unit School District 1 will be replacing a school parking lot, as well as storage facilities damaged by the November tornado.

At the District 1 board meeting last week, the board voted to accept the lowest responsible bid for parking lot maintenance from “D” Construction Inc. of Coal City with a base bid amount of $126,010.20 for the Summer 2014 parking lot project.

The district received three bids for the project in February from Accu-Paving Company, Austin Tyler Construction, Inc. and “D” Construction. At the March board meeting, the district accepted “D” Construction’s bid for the parking lot replacement at the Intermediate School, but tabled action on the maintenance bids that were submitted.

“At our March meeting we approved the resurfacing of the Intermediate School parking lot at a cost of $141,281,” Superintendent Kent Bugg said this week. “We’ve held off on the project for three years, but we have to get it done.”

He said due to the extreme winter conditions, maintenance work on the other parking lots is needed as well.

“The board held off voting on the maintenance bids that were submitted, because they wanted to do more research,” Bugg said. “We have to get the project done.”

The maintenance bid includes crack filling, seal coating, re-striping and other repairs to the parking lots of all district facilities.

“We are doing things that will hopefully save us money down the road,” Bugg said.

The board also authorized the director of business services to go out for bids for storage buildings for the district.

Two storage buildings on property owned by the district on Spring Road were damaged by the November tornado and need to be leveled and rebuilt.

“Insurance will be paying to replace the buildings but we still have to go out to bid due to the estimated cost,” Bugg said.

One of the storage buildings is used to store items for a tenant farmer who rents property from the district. As part of the contract, the school provides the storage facility along with the acreage. The other building is used to store miscellaneous equipment and supplies that don’t fit on other properties owned by the district.

“They will need to take down the current structures and rebuild the new ones over the summer,” Bugg said.
