CHANNAHON – A Dwight man was clocked at 118 mph just before he drove into the Des Plaines River Bridge construction zone on Interstate 55 on Sunday, police said.

Nathaniel F. Stainck, 25, was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding more than 40 mph over the speed limit, disobeying a traffic control device and driving without carrying his license.

State police said Stainck was stopped on northbound Interstate 55 just before Blodgett Road.

Last year, 172 crashes occurred in the construction zone including two fatal ones. State police issued 4,836 tickets during that time. Most of those tickets – 3,125 – were for speeding.

Construction on the project resumed this month, and troopers are patrolling the construction zone around the clock.

State officials held a media event at the Des Plaines Bridge last week to promote safety and draw attention to the hazards of driving in the construction zone. By the following day, however, there was already an accident when three semitrailers collided.
