Letter: Tax increase needs to remain

Published: Friday, May 9, 2014 9:29 p.m. CDT

Our state legislators need to make a decision about the fate of Illinois state-funded programs.

They have two choices. First choice: they can extend the current 5 percent income tax increase and protect the lives of thousands of Illinoisans who depend on safety net services.

Second choice: they can choose not to extend the increase and devastate the lives of thousands.

There is no third choice. No one likes taxes, yet hundreds of thousands of people receive benefits as a result of taxes. If the General Assembly does not extend the tax increase, hundreds of thousands of children, teens, senior citizens, and people with disabilities will be at risk of losing valuable services.

We encourage our state legislators to do the right thing for Illinois citizens and vote to extend the 5 percent income tax increase.
