Roundup: Seneca’s Lovett highlights Irish state track qualifiers

Minooka boys win sectional title

SENECA – Seneca’s Tommy Lovett made the most of his home track Friday when he qualified for this weekend’s state finals in the 110-meter hurdles. Lovett turned in the fastest qualifying time in the state in Class 1A with his 14.77-second finish. Lovett was one of a contingent of Irish to qualify for the finals after finishing third in the Seneca Sectional.

Seneca’s Trevin Suel cleared 12-foot-6 in finishing second in the pole vault to qualify for state, and Ross McCormick took second in the 3,200-meter run in 10:12.36 and was second in the 800 in 2:02.06. Also for the Irish, the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, both consisting of Lovett, Carter Gallick, Seul and Lucas Ward, qualified with times of 44.38 and 1:31.84, respectively.

Class 3A Joliet West Sectional: Minooka won the title Friday with 88.5 points. Neuqua Valley was second with 67.

Peter Andreano was a double-winner for the Indians, taking the long jump (22-0∏) and the high jump (6-5) titles and qualifying for state in those events. Shabari Bailey won the title in the 110-high hurdles with a time of 14.41, while Chris Wilson was second in the 400-meter dash in 48.18 to qualify for state. Ryan Pullara took third in the pole vault, but qualified for state by clearing 13-9. The Minooka 4x100 relay team of Devin Ingram, Victor Turpin, Mitch Miller and Wilson finished first with a time of 42.36, while the 4x200 team of Ingram, Turpin, Miller and Matt Dlugopolski took second in 1:28.23 to qualify. The 4x400 relay team of Kyle Shelton, Kyle Brown, Matt Szymel and Wilson finished third, but qualified for state with a time of 3:21.76.

SOFTBALL

Class 3A Morris Regional: Ottawa defeated LaSalle-Peru, 9-2, and advanced to Saturday’s 11 a.m. title game against Morris.

Class 1A Gardner-South Wilmington Sectional: Wednesday’s semifinal between Somonauk and Luther North was postponed until at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The winner will play Gardner-South Wilmington at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
