Morris wins first baseball regional since 2003

MORRIS — A four-hitter by sophomore Matt Walker led the Morris baseball team to its first regional title since 2003 on Saturday in a 2-0 win over LaSalle-Peru in the Class 3A Morris Regional. Walker walked two, hit a batter and struck out nine. His last strikeout, a called third strike, ended the game and sent the club into a mad jubilation on top of him near the mound.

Senior Tim Smyk got the Redskins (28-9) on the board in the bottom of the first inning, when he singled to right with two outs, scoring Trevor Lines, who reached on an error and went to second on a single by Tom Cheshareck. Cheshareck finished 2 for 2 with a double, while Smyk also had two hits. The other Morris run came in the bottom of the fourth when Grant Schluntz walked and scored when a ball Lines hit was bobbled for an error.

Morris' next game will be Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the LaSalle-Peru Sectional against Peoria Notre Dame, which beat Bartonville Limestone 3-2 on Saturday.
