SPRINGFIELD – Staff at the Morris Daily Herald won two awards Friday in the Illinois Press Association's annual Excellence in News contest.
News Editor Christina Chapman-Van Yperen placed third in the News Reporting – Series category for her reporting on the case involving Morris Community High School teacher Steffen Balegno of Coal City, who was found guilty of unlawful grooming and indecent solicitation of a child.
"Good, solid reporting on a disturbing case," the judges wrote in their comments. "Nice to get the interview with the victim and let him tell his story so that others can learn from his experience."
Samantha Kiesel, a copy editor with Shaw Media who had done design and page layout for the newspaper, took third place in Headline Writing.
The Morris Daily Herald competes in the small daily class, which includes those publications with circulations of 10,000 or less.
