Not only can they be unsightly, if they’re not taken care of they can lead to serious health problems, says Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center.

Who gets varicose veins?

“Anyone can be a candidate for varicosity in the legs—both men and women,” Malinowski said. “Usually people who have jobs where they stand a lot. Varicose veins can also be inherited or can be brought on by pregnancy. ”

While they can be prevented by wearing support hose early on, it’s still important to treat

varicose and spider veins “because they will only get worse,” Malinowski said.

“They will not go away on their own. If varicose veins are not treated they can lead to terrible hyperpientation and ulcers in the legs,” she said. “There is also the risk of blood clots. The legs can become painful and can also burn and itch and may cause trouble sleeping at night.”

How can one know if he or she suffers from varicose veins? After an initial consultation at Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, an ultrasound study will be done to determine the location and extent of the abnormal veins in both legs. After that, a treatment plan will be developed to properly treat the vein disease.

Treatments can range from injection sclerotherapy to laser treatments. The procedures, which take about 45 minutes, are done in the office under local anesthetic.

But a word to the wise--the procedure may not be covered by insurance.

Spider veins may be a result of varicose veins or they may not be,” Malinowski said. “If they are not this is a cosmetic procedure and won't be covered by insurance. If they are a result of varicose veins insurance will cover to clean up the spider veins after the endovenous laser ablation treatment is done.”
