First installment of real estate tax bills now overduePayments of the 2007 real estate tax may be made at the Grundy County Treasurer's Office in the courthouse, at local banks listed on the reverse side of the tax bill, on line at www.grundyco.org or via the automated telephone line (866) 755-7834. There is a 2.7-percent fee added to the taxes and applicable late fees for the use of credit cards, or an additional $3.50 per transaction for bank debits. Local banks will collect taxes through Sept. 5; the telephone and on-line payments are accepted through Oct. 14. After that date, all payments must be directed to the treasurer's office. The first installment of taxes was due June 4, and currently has a 4 1/2-percent interest penalty. The penalty is listed on each stub under “late charges.” The second installment of taxes is due Sept. 4. Delinquent notices, which will include late charges, will be mailed the last part of September. Delinquent taxes will be published in local newspapers in mid-October. The tax sale will be at 9 a.m. Nov. 13. Interested bidders must be registered by Oct. 28, which is 10 business days prior to the sale. Please note the courthouse will be closed Monday, Sept. 1, in observance of Labor Day. Real estate taxes are based on a third of the fair market value, less exemptions such as owner occupied, senior citizen's exemption, senior assessment freeze, home improvement, returning veteran and disabled/disabled veteran. This amount is your taxable assessment, which, multiplied by the total tax district's rate, as a percent, equals the amount owed for taxes. If a taxpayer does not receive an exemption, contact the Grundy County Assessor's office. Farm taxes are based on productivity. Many tax bills are returned by the post office. If you have moved or wish to correct the mailing address of your tax bill, contact the Grundy County Assessor's Office. Numerous escrow tax services do not want to receive a “hard copy” of the tax bill as they receive an “electronic” bill. In that case, the homeowner should have the tax bill mailed to their home. It is the homeowner's responsibility to check that payment has been made on the taxes. Grundy County's total extension for tax year 2006 is $121,458,976.84 These funds are distributed to the local tax districts, which are listed on each tax bill. The first distribution was made on July 1, 2008, in the amount $57. 5 million. |
