On Friday, June 26, members of New Community Christian Church stocked the pantry shelves at We Care of Grundy County.

New Community Christian Church, 705 E. Washington St., Morris, provided the $650 donation and 10 volunteers to help unload the truckload of food that was ordered from Northern Illinois Food Bank.

“We see that this is a huge need. This is just one small thing as a church that we can do to help meet that need. We believe our purpose here is to serve others,” Julie Lardi, administrative assistant for New Community Christian Church, said.

“New Community Christian Church has been the most loyal supporter of this program. With the kind of consistency they’ve shown, it’s very easy when they come to unload the food,” Denise Gaska, We Care’s executive director, said.

“They know where everything goes! We Care appreciates their demonstration of love through action. In May, we served over 130 families from our pantry. The Fill the Pantry program is helping us continue to meet the needs that keep growing.”

We Care receives a monthly delivery of food for the pantry from the Northern Illinois Food Bank. The NIFB is able to provide food to food pantries at prices that are unattainable in grocery stores.

The delivery that New Community Christian Church purchased and unloaded included muffin mix for 20 cents each, two-liter bottles of soda for for 24 cents each, and four-packs of cottage cheese for 11 cents each.

Upcoming Fill the Pantry sponsors include Morris Retail Association; Malmquist & Geiger, Holsinger & Assoc., Gomien & Harrop, and Hynds, Rooks, Yohnka & Bzdill; Friends in Christ Lutheran Church; and Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers.

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance.

We Care is a United Way partner agency and is funded primarily by private donations
