The American Legion Riders from Morris Post 294 recently donated $1,000 to We Care. “Most of our fundraising goes to the La Salle Veterans’ Home, but we wanted to make a donation to We Care,” Gene Strickland said. We Care of Grundy County received a donation of $1,000 Friday, Oct. 23, from the American Legion Riders of local American Legion Post 294.

Director Denise Gaska welcomed the donation, saying the agency's needs have increased 35 to 40 percent from the same time last year.

"And those needs were up 40 percent from the year before," she noted.

Gaska said donations to We Care, both large and small, are important to make the picture complete.

"The size of a donation like this is really important," she added.

The donation was presented by Legion Riders Director Jerry Terando and organization spokesman Eugene "Geno" Strickland.

"Our organization puts on activities all through the year," Strickland said. "We put on rides and special events. We do welcome home rides for returning military personnel, other welcome home events, and military funerals."

The largest single organization for which the Legion Riders raises money is the La Salle Veterans Home in La Salle.

"We've been doing this the past couple of years, now," Strickland said. "We raise money for veterans. That's what our organization is all about – to raise money for veterans and veterans' families."

The Legion Riders was begun about three years ago. There are 33 members.

Cubs bring back Grabow, deal Heilman

I suppose it's been a pretty good week for the Chicago Cubs ... though there's a ton of work left to be done if the Cubs want to get back in a position to contend for a championship.

Lincecum, Greinke win Cy Young awards

Zack Greinke justly won the American League Cy Young award earlier this week. I'm not so sure Tim Lincecum of San Francisco deserved his second straight win in the NL, which he received today.
