Comments (...)

Minooka qualified for the IHSA Class 3A Cross Country State Meet Saturday with its showing at the Normal Community West Sectional at Maxwell Park.

By placing third in the boys race, the Indians joined team champion O'Fallon, Normal West, Edwardsville and Moline in advancing out of the sectional. Its girls team was fifth, which was just enough to qualify along with Lincoln-Way East, O'Fallon, Normal West and Andrew. The state meet is next Saturday at Detweiller Park in East Peoria.

Gardner-South Wilmington, Reed-Custer and Seneca did not qualify any runners for the state meet. They competed at the 1A Aurora Christian Sectional.

In girls volleyball competition Saturday, Minooka ended its season with a 28-26, 25-19 loss to Normal Community in the championship match at the Class 4A Minooka Regional. Coal City was also upended at the Class 2A Manteno Regional championship, falling 20-25, 25-12, 25-23 to Manteno. Dwight won its own 1A regional, knocking off Grant Park 25-13, 25-9 in the championship match. Newark defeated Ottawa Marquette 25-19, 25-22 at the 1A Somonauk Regional for the title.

Friday night, Wilmington ended Reed-Custer's football season with a 33-7 defeat of the Comets in a Class 3A first-round playoff game.

Complete coverage of the weekend's prep action will follow this week in the Morris Daily Herald.

Lincecum, Greinke win Cy Young awards

Zack Greinke justly won the American League Cy Young award earlier this week. I'm not so sure Tim Lincecum of San Francisco deserved his second straight win in the NL, which he received today.
