MINOOKA – If you want to open a business in town, you will need a business license.
While many area communities already require a license to do business, Minooka has not previously had such a mandate.
"We want more control when a business comes in," Village President Pat Brennan said. "Sometimes a business will open and we won't know until someone drives by and sees it."
James Grabowski, village administrator, said the biggest concern for the village is if the business is in the correct location in regards to the village's zoning.
"They move in and they may not be in the proper zoning," Grabowski said. "If they don't pull a permit, we have no way of letting them know."
He said an example would be if a car repair shop went in a residentially zoned area.
In addition to proper zoning, the license allows the village to perform an inspection every three years in conjunction with the fire department.
The application will include all information needed by the village and the police department.
"The Village has been working with the fire district to coordinate our registration with their annual inspections," Grabowski said.
The license will carry a fee of $50 for the initial application and $25 annually for renewal.
Grabowski said the license will not be transferable if the business is sold.
The licensing period is from May 1 to April 30 of the following year.
It isn't clear if their will be a background check run on the owners of the business.
"Staff is seeking input on whether to perform a background check as part of the business registration," Grabowski said. "Staff has contacted other communities for their procedures regarding the background checks and some communities perform them and others do not."
