Contracts looking past construction

With work progressing rapidly on the new Municipal Services Building, Morris aldermen Monday night took action on two additional projects for the structure.

Architects Gilfillan, Callahan, Nelson will be paid $15,000 to design the information technology system to be installed in the building. The architects who designed the building will prepare bid specifications and the city will then award the contract for the actual installation of the cables and other equipment.

The infrastructure design will include the location of equipment and connections, an equipment schedule for all network components, and a network diagram of the infrastructure, as well as the bidding documents and specifications.

Mayor Richard Kopczick explained the conduit will be installed during construction, so the cable can be pulled through once the system is designed

The city hall and the police department sides of the building will be on separate computer networks, he said.

AT & T will bring their cables into a room in the basement, and the fiber optic telephone cables will then be extended throughout the building, based on the design developed by the architects.

The system will also have to connect with the county’s 911 center.

Aldermen Randy Larson and Don Matteson voted against awarding the contract and Alderman Don Barkley was absent.

Gordon & Backhus, 1802 Division St., was awarded the contract to provide the key control software system for the new building, at a cost of $678.50.

“Gordon and Backhus will be the locksmith for the building,” the mayor said.

They will provide an Assa Abloy Kew Wizard system, which will control each key, the location of each lock in the building, who has each key and what parts of the building can be accessed with it.

“If someone loses a key, they won’t be able to duplicate it,” the mayor said. “We will have to go through the locksmith to even get a blank from the manufacturer. The mayor or the clerk will have to sign a form to request a blank.”

The motion to award the contract to Gordon and Backhus passed with Aldermen Larson and Matteson opposed.

Alderman Donald Hansen reported the second floor deck, three inches thick, has been poured.

“They had 20 bricklayers on the site Monday,” Hansen said, “and the first floor ventilation system has arrived.” He added that electricians are working in the basement, getting ready for ComEd.

“They could pour the floor of the council chambers Tuesday,” he added.

Despite all the rain in October, Hansen said the project manager was fairly confident the building will be enclosed before winter.

Cubs bring back Grabow, deal Heilman

I suppose it's been a pretty good week for the Chicago Cubs ... though there's a ton of work left to be done if the Cubs want to get back in a position to contend for a championship.

Lincecum, Greinke win Cy Young awards

Zack Greinke justly won the American League Cy Young award earlier this week. I'm not so sure Tim Lincecum of San Francisco deserved his second straight win in the NL, which he received today.
