Morris senior captain Kevin Henry stands 6-5 and weighs 265. It was his stature and athleticism which attracted Central Michigan to recruit the Redskins' lineman. While playing end, tackle and linebacker this year for the locals, Henry has been recruited by the Chippewas as a defensive end.
While college is right around the corner, Henry is taking the time to enjoy his senior season in town and relishing playing in the playoffs. Henry recently sat down with the Morris Daily Herald for a Q&A session and here's what he had to say.
Q: Do you think the Morris football team is where it needs to be right now?
A: Yeah, I do. I think we've been working hard and right now we're in the playoffs with a 6-4 record. There's always room for improvement, but we've been doing a better job. Offensively we've been doing better lately and the defense has been getting a lot of three and outs.
Q: Has there been a highlight to the season?
A: "Making the playoffs for sure. A lot of people were going around and saying we weren't going to make it and here we are making our run right now."
Q: Do you have a personal favorite moment to the season?
A: "My personal favorite was the L-P [La Salle-Peru] game. It was my birthday (Sept. 11) and it was one of my best games all year. I just played my game that day and I did well."
Q: How far do you think this team can go and why?
A: "We have high expectations. I think we can go all the way to state. We have to keep doing what we've been doing, continue to execute and beat the team in front of us."
Q: What are the keys to the team's success?
A: "The key for us on offense is to get the ball to our playmakers. We have a lot of guys playing well right now and we have to get them the ball. On defense we have to fly around and gang tackle and play our game."
Q: What is your favorite thing about the game of football?
A: "Defense. For sure playing defense. I love flying around and being able to hit someone. I just love playing defense and I want to be out there."
Q: What do you like to do in your spare time? Do you have any hobbies?
A: "I really don't have any free time. Since I've been in high school, I've gone straight from football to basketball to baseball. But I enjoy every second of it. On the weekends, I like to hang out with friends and to watch football, but like right now, during the week, I'm doing homework. My school work comes first."
Q: Who are your favorite college and pro teams?
A: "My favorite college team is Central Michigan because they recruited me. I also like the Bears. In fact, I've been to each home game this year. A friend of mine has season tickets. I also went up to the homecoming game at Central Michigan this year the weekend we were supposed to be playing Ottawa. I've also seen all but one of their games on TV."
Q: What kind of lessons do you think football has taught you?
A: "It teaches a lot of discipline because you have to know what you are doing out there — especially on the defensive line. Football also keeps you out of trouble, too.
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
A: "I'm going to go to Central Michigan where they have recruited me to play football as a defensive end."
