Approximately 235 area families received a total of 11,235 pounds of food from the Northern Illinois Food Bank mobile food pantry visit to the Assumption Catholic Church Berst Center in Coal City on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

Each household received approximately 47 pounds of food, including 15 pounds of frozen meat and a wide variety of other items, including potatoes, black cherry juice, cereal, bananas, English muffins and bread.

New Community Christian Church, 705 E. Washington, Morris, provided the funds and at least 20 volunteers for the mobile food pantry.

“New Community Christian Church is grateful for the opportunity to help with this huge need,” Julie Lardi said. “The volunteers are blessed as much as those receiving the food. It gives us the opportunity to be God’s hands and do his work here on earth. We Care is a great organization that truly cares for the people of the community.”

The next mobile food pantry will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and is sponsored by First Christian Church in Morris. Registration will begin at approximately 3:45 p.m., and at least the first 100 numbers for a place in line will be drawn by lottery.

Mobile pantries for 2009 are scheduled to take place on the second Wednesday of each month.

Any family that resides in Grundy County and is in need of assistance with food is welcome to come to these food distributions. Recipients are asked to provide proof of their residency either with a valid drivers’ license, state I.D. or utility bill with their current Grundy County address. Every person in line will be asked to show this proof, even if they have been to a mobile food pantry in the past.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to bring a container to carry the items they will receive; plastic laundry baskets and wheeled carts work well for this purpose. It is not necessary to let us know if you plan to attend the distributions, but if you have any questions, please feel free to call the We Care office at (815) 942-6389.

Upcoming mobile food pantry sponsors include First Christian Church, Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers and Living Water Church of the Nazarene.

We Care is a local nonprofit agency that provides emergency assistance to Grundy County residents in the form of food, rent, utility and prescription assistance. We Care is a United Way partner agency and is funded primarily by private donations.

MLB preview: Philadelphia Phillies

Every other team in the NL East looks improved, meaning the Phillies could be caught after they made a late push to repeat as division champion in 2009. I think they've still got way too much of everything to expect that they'll not come out on top once again.

MLB preview: New York Mets

You would think that things can't possibly go as badly for the Mets this year as they did in 2009. Then again, the Mets have made a habit of not performing as well as their talent would suggest they should. They've still got some nice players, but I doubt they'll compete seriously in the NL East.
